Music Video asignment 1

Music video online blog

I have been asked to put together an online blog detailing some of the purposes of music videos as well as their styles, conventions and techniques. They are hoping that this will help them in how to  approach their music videos.

Purposes

Send a message

Every music video has a purposes for an example if they are trying to get a point across (send a message) they would use the power of images and lyrics such as The X-factor finalists 2008- Hero. The images are powerful and the draw the audience in. This is good because it will make the audience want to watch on to see what happens, also if people are going on to youtube to view the video people might get addicted to the song and maybe buy it on Itunes or buy the album if there is a series of songs they like.

Promote an artist

In most music video we always see the singer or the bang in the video. This is promoting them self. Also artists who have live videos of them playing are promoting them self by basically saying look this is how I sound live you should come and see me for an example Metallica - Master of puppets Recorded live in Canada on
August 2012 and it also featured in the motion picture Metallica Through the Never.

Techniques

cutting to the beat

Must music cut to the beat but why do they do it well it keeps the viewer interested and hooked on to the video just like Smallpools-Dreaming. They cut to the beat if you watch the video when the drum sounds the scean changes.

Slow Motion

Not many music have slow motion in them but they if they do they don't have anything to do about the music its about what the story in the video it self. For an example Shawn Mendes-Stitches use slow motion in his music video for the storyline.

Styles
The style of a music video will depend greatly on the genre of music that it is created for.
So, a music video intended for a pop song would tend to be different to one that is intended for a rock song, which will also be different to one intended for a rap song.

Here is a bullet point list of different styles:

  • Narrative
  • Interpretive
  • Parody
  • Performance

Narrative
A narrative is a music video that tells a story through out. It can be a fictional or non-fictional. This type of music video can be very popular, because it engages the audience into the story and give the viewer a different meaning to the song.

Parody
A parody is a mick take out of an original music video. In the past few years parody's are becoming more popular.

Performance
Performance means that the music video includes live footage of the artist

Techniques

Music videos use a number of techniques as well as using styles to help promote their videos.

SFX

SFX are special effects or illusions used in a film or in this case a music video. it is used to simulate something that can no be created on location.

Post production

Post production is a part of film making and the editing process. For example an editor would be involved with cutting the clips together and adding special effects.

Conventions

Camera shots

In music videos camera shots are important because they will give the pace of the video. For example cutting to the beat will give the tempo and will fit with the track nicely. Also cutting to the beat will make the story you are trying to tell fit together.
